On previous trips to French Polynesia, we did not spend much time on the main island of Tahiti. However, on our recent trip, we decided to spend a few nights on the beautiful main island to explore everything Tahiti has to offer. We’re so glad we did! The newly rebranded Sofitel has so much to offer if you’re looking for a nice stopover in Tahiti. The Sofitel Ia Ora Beach Resort took over the previously named Le Meridien (Marriott) and has done several nice updates to rebrand as the unique Accor brand, Sofitel.

The Sofitel is situated on one of the better beach areas of the main island due to the calm lagoon that surrounds the property. The hotel has a beautiful, Asian-inspired architecture that both stands out and blends in naturally to the surrounding area. The hotel grounds are stunning, with endless lawns, flowers and gardens.

There are a number of different buildings and not all room types are the same, so our recommendation is to evaluate carefully and decide what matters most to you. We were booked into a King Panoramic View Room and the view was of the grounds of the hotel. It’s a stunning view, but you certainly do not get the same oceanfront view that you may expect with the name “panoramic”. However, the rooms are updated to include hardwood floors, new furnishings and great toiletries.

HOTEL REVIEW: SOFITEL IA ORA BEACH, TAHITI

The pool at the Sofitel is one of the more unique experiences I have had. The pool is set up to look like a beach, filled with sand and a water’s edge. We have only ever seen this type of pool in Bali, and it’s a beautiful pool that attracts so many families.

One of the issues we experienced on property was the fact that they cater mostly to locals, with brunches, events, weddings and other onsite activities that hotel guests are not invited to, unless they know about it. It was a bit disappointing to be turned away or wait in long lines.
